MAPW: Defence policy ignores public opinion

An MAPW analysis of community submissions on the 2009 Defence White Paper confirms that the report on these submissions ignored a widespread call for peace-making to take priority over military approaches to Australia's security.

The panel responsible for consulting with the public highlighted the views of the military and weapons industry while dismissing or downplaying views and evidence suggesting decreased spending, or promoting diplomatic resolution of conflict.

  • Greens Senator Scott Ludlam, during Senate Estimates hearings, has queried how much community views were considered during the preparation of the White Paper.
