The Asia Pacific Defence and Security Exhibition (APDSE) is an arms fair. It will be held in Adelaide from 11-13 November 2008. It provides military companies from all over the world with an opportunity to display and sell their latest war fighting machinery. It opens, inappropriately, on Remembrance Day. Anti nuclear groups applaud PM’s Hiroshima initiative: 9 June 2008
MAPW has congratulated Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for his announcement that Australia will set up a new international body to push for nuclear disarmament. President Dr Sue Wareham OAM, also an Australian Board Member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, said that Mr Rudd should also be applauded for visiting Hiroshima – the first Australian Prime Minister to do so. Dr Wareham and others are available for comment.
New treaty bans worst types of cluster munitions
In Dublin between 19 May and 28 May, 110 governments negotiated a new international treaty, the Convention on Cluster Munitions, that will ban cluster munitions that “cause unacceptable harm to civilians”. The treaty bans all the cluster munitions that have been extensively used. Cluster munitions: write a letter to the Australian government - April 2008
An international treaty to ban cluster bombs will be negotiated in Dublin on 19 – 30 May 2008. Australia is among a group of countries seeking to "water down" this important treaty in several significant ways. This Uniting Church resource is to assist people to write to the government urging support for the full treaty. A new clear direction: Securing nuclear medicine for the next generation. MAPW - 2004
This 2004 MAPW study concluded that the new nuclear reactor then planned (and since built) at Lucas Heights in Sydney, was not needed for medical purposes. It describes the argument that the reactor was needed for nuclear medicine, as a "myth", arguing that isotopes can be imported, produced in some cases without a reactor, or that other diagnostic procedures can be used.
